Abstract
The distribution and characteristics of dopaminergic neurons were investigated in the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) midbrain by immunohistochemical method with a tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) antibody. TH-immunoreactive neurons were distributed in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc: dopaminergic neuron group A9) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA: dopaminergic neuron group A10). The vast majority of TH-immunoreactive neurons were found in the SNc. Numerous THimmunoreactive neuronal cell bodies were located in the caudal part of the SNc. Most TH-immunoreactive neurons of the SNc were multipolar in shape and large in size. In the VTA, TH-immunoreactive neurons were grouped in a triangular zone located dorsal to the interpeduncular nucleus, medial to the substantia nigra and ventral to the oculomotor nucleus. Most TH-imunoreactive neurons of the VTA were oval or round in shape, and small in size. These data would provide a morphological basis for future studies about the dopaminergic neuronal system in primate brains.
